I made the call late Saturday afternoon. The gal I spoke with told me that Hazel was taken to the pet adoption on Saturday and she was shocked that no one chose to adopt her. I asked about their adoption process, cost, etc. and she also told me I could bring Tucker with me to see how the two interact. I made the arrangements to meet Hazel at 4:30 on Monday. This adoption center is called Prison Dogs, and they are actually adopted out of the Lansing Correction Facility.

My mom wanted to come with us to meet Hazel, so Tucker and I picked her up at work and we headed out to Lansing. It's a bit of a haul out there, but we got out there in plenty of time. Since it's the correctional facility, we couldn't bring anything with us - cellphones, etc. We went in, through security and such, and sat in the waiting area.
The gal at the guard desk was hilarious and you could tell she's been toughened up by the job she's had for so many years. Anyway, we chatted with her quite a bit. She kept calling to this guys office to let him know we were there. They tried him on the radio, etc. The gals in his office said that he hadn't turned in his keys, so he had to be somewhere on the premises...we waited, and waited, and waited. Poor Tucker was getting a bit restless, so my mom took him back outside to walk around a bit.
When almost an hour had passed, I was starting to get annoyed. They were adament that I call ahead if I needed to change anything, yet here I sit waiting for an hour and still no puppy. Finally, I told the guard that I was gonna go back out to the car and call the number I called Saturday. I called. Wendy answered. I introduced myself and reminded her that we spoke Saturday and I was supposed to meet her husband and Hazel out here at the prison. She stumbled around for a minute and then tells me that Hazel was adopted yesterday. What? How did that happen, I asked? Again, she stutters and stammers with excuses. I finally interupted her and just said, you can explain all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that I drove nearly an hour to get here, and have been waiting more than an hour - for nothing!
At a MINIMUM, they could've told the guard desk that when someone showed up to meet a dog...let them know she's been adopted. ANNOYING!!! I mean, I am really glad that Hazel has a home, but I was really annoyed that I had wasted soooo much time for nothing. Of course, I was also sad that I didn't get to meet the little lady.
So, no pup for me and Tucker. I'm sure it's for the best. Maybe another time...I hope Hazel has a happy home!

Such a cutie.
Nathanael was so disappointed, he had me searching dogs with your zip code so that we could find another dog for you. He's a sweetie to think of wanting to do that for Aunt Dawn.

Aww! Hazel is such a cute puppy. I'm sure there was some reason for it in the end. But granted, one would think it would have been handled better.
