So, I headed out pretty early this morning...I believe I was actually on my bike and pedaling about 6:40. And, the best news? I had to slather the sunscreen on more than just my face - it's warm and sunny today! Even at 6:40, I could see that it was going to be a beautiful, clear and sunny day. This is the first time in MONTHS that I've ridden in short sleeves and shorts! No tights or armwarmers today - no sir!
I took a familiar route, and headed from Platte Woods out through Camden Point and Dearborn. Terry was starting the Cycle City ride at 8, so I was going to try to meet up with him between Camden Point and Dearborn. I went on past Dearborn towards Platte City for a bit, and then turned around. As it turns out, my timing was pretty good, 'cause I spotted Terry riding towards me just past Dearborn. So, I had a good hour and 1/2 or so before meeting up with him.
I felt "light" when I left the car this morning - meaning that I felt like I was forgetting something. I checked for tubes, CO2, pump, keys, phone...what am I missing? Well, it didn't hit me till I pulled into the gas station at Dearborn (the first time) that I forgot MONEY! Oh boy...I'm gonna need more than just my perpetuum and this one thing of water. Geesh - how could I forget that?! Terry didn't have money either, but at least he had his water bottle - all I had was my drink system on the front of my bike. I took his water bottle, filled it up, filled up the water side of my drink system and re-filled his bottle. At least I'll have more water.
We rode through Platte City on a route that loops back around to Interurban. It was really nice to have the sunshine, though it was heating up a bit. When we got back to Interurban, I told Terry to go ahead and take off - he was on a little bit of a time crunch, and I knew I couldn't hammer with 30 more miles or so to go. I did, however, head back toward the car so I could at least get my $$$! When I got back to the car, I'd been riding right at 5 hours. I could tell I was pretty "empty", but I guzzled some water. I got a text message from Troy about that time, asking how it was going. I ended up calling him and we chatted for a few minutes while I stretched out in the back of my car (another bonus to the ol' CR-V!). My back was a bit tired/tight, so it felt great to lay down for a minute. Troy was getting ready to do his run, so with an exchange of encouragement, we hung up and got back to business. I rode up to QT and grabbed a Coke. I shook all the fizz out and drank it up. Mmmmm...felt great to get some sugar in me - not to mention a cold beverage! I rode around the area, staying fairly close to the car. I just didn't want to get too far away at this point, 'cause I was feeling rather "done".
I ended up with right at 6 hours, but only got 100 miles. So, I'm a bit disappointed with the lower mileage, and would've really liked to get in 110+.
