Well, friends, I've been out of touch for a while...what's been going on? Well, I traveled almost all this week. I headed out of town early Monday morning, on a direct flight to Oakland, CA. I was without travel troubles on this leg of my journey, and on tap was dinner with a coworker in our Mtn. View office, and a client meeting in the office Tuesday morning. Dinner was good and the meeting went well. My workout in the hotel fitness center was SUPER steamy!!! It was in a tiny room - 2 treadmills with 2 exercise bikes right behind the treadmills - weights set up in front of the treadmills, and some very fogged up windows in front of those. It was so, so hot and muggy in there. At any rate, you see that I did get my workout in!
Oh, and I might also mention that the steamy room may have been attributable to the rain - that's right, it rained! Are you kidding? I'm in California...why is it raining the one day I'm here?!?!
So, immediately following our meeting, I drove the rental car to San Jose airport and caught a flight (no, I didn't say a direct flight) to Washington DC. We were on time leaving CA, but hit the snag, not surprisingly, in Chicago. We sat on the runway for a very long time, waiting for our turn to be de-iced. Oh, I hadn't mentioned that it was snowing, snowing, snowing! I mean, as we sat there, I just watched the windows get completely covered over with snow. Ok, so on with the story - our very kind flight attendants started a movie for us, so that was a nice distraction. Finally it was our turn to take off - 3 hours later! Obviously that put us into DC late - I ended up checking into my hotel around 2 a.m. - ouch!
We had meetings in DC Wednesday afternoon, and it just snowed all day long. I ventured out for a bit earlier in the day...just to see what I could see...what a great city! Too bad there wasn't more time for sight-seeing. Again, good meetings in DC, and a good steak dinner that night. I got to bed kind of late, and had to get up pretty early to catch a 7am train to Philly. Yep, I said train.
My coworker and I took a train to Philly for another meeting. This was an interesting experience. Sure, I've ridden on kiddie trains, etc. before, and I rode the train in Australia quite a bit, but I have not traveled by train from city-to-city in the US before. It's really a great way to commute to work. People were doing all kinds of things on the train - chatting on the phone, working on laptops, watching tv shows on whatever device...it sure beats sitting in traffic.
It was also pretty looking out at the snow-covered countryside - very pretty.
Our cab ride to the meeting (about 40 min) was a bit treacherous at times. The roads were snowy and icy, and, well, when isn't a cab ride scary, huh? Anyway, we made it to the meeting in one piece, and had a good meeting at that. Then, we were back in a cab (the same cab, I might add) to the airport. I really must update my travel profile to remind me that I DO NOT want the nonstop flight on US Airways out of Philly! We were moved from gate to gate (maint. issues), and finally put us on a puddle jumper that was VERY crowded, smelly, and hot! It's a long flight as it is, but felt even longer due to the conditions. And though we were several hours late, I was quite happy to be home.
So, that's where I've been.
