June 12, 2007

Well, the KC Corporate Challenge bike race, originally scheduled for May something or other, was rescheduled for tonight. My age group was "up" at 6pm, so I left work around 4:30. I was hoping to get out to the Kansas Speedway, warm up for about an hour and be ready to roll. I had to make a pit stop for some coffee, so I ended up getting out to the Speedway a little later than I hoped. I got everything set up and ready to go and went to register. The registration line was longer than I expected too, so that ate into my warm up. As it turned out, I ended up with about 11 minutes of warm up time (not really enough for this type of all out effort, right?). I also downed a GU and my coffee - with the thought I had 20 minutes till race time. I saw a bunch of gals gathering at the line around quarter till 6, so I bolted over there to be sure I wasn't missing something. Sure enough, they started us early! So, the GU/coffee didn't have time to take effect at all - not to mention it hadn't really settled either. Oh well. Here goes.
They weren't sending us off in any particular spread of time, so I know I waited at least a full minute, likely longer before they started me. I just rode like a mad woman, right into the head wind. I was feeling like I was gonna puke before I had even rounded the first curve. I eased up a bit. Once I hit the flatter surface and had turned out of the wind, I really hit it hard. It's odd, 'cause you would think with the course being an oval, you would be able to tell when you're nearing the end, but somehow I'm never quite sure that this is the last curve into the home stretch...that is, until I see the home stretch. A little late at that point, however. Anyway, of course you hit the wind again going into the finish, but I pushed hard to finish it out. I didn't stop my computer right away, so I wasn't certain of my time.
They also indicated that they weren't giving results until week's end or so....we'll see!
