Uh-Oh!

Yesterday was the last, long bike ride, and today was supposed to be the last long run. I felt pretty normal when I got up this morning, so that's good news - maybe the ice bath did the trick! I'm tellin' ya, that's almost more painful than doing the workouts! 10 minutes sure doesn't sound like a long time, but take my word for it - it feels like hours when your sitting in cold, cold water!

I headed home pretty quickly after church this morning. I knew time would be tight to get this run in. I came home, changed and ate a quick bite before heading to the park. I brought lotsa water, 'cause it's a hot one out there. I did about a 10 minute warm up and then started into my 9:1 run/walk routine. The first minute or two of the run were kinda painful, but I was surprised how quickly I fell into a rythym and was feeling good. My legs, lungs...everything felt great. I was excited. This is a good sign. I'm ready to go. I chose this park, 'cause it's a mile loop and I could stop every mile to grab a quick drink, and wouldn't have to carry things with me. As I mentioned, it's pretty toasty out today!
I was about 1:30 into the run, which means I had gone about 8 miles or so - all the sudden, the bones in my left foot started to hurt - to the point I couldn't run normally. I was forced to run to the outside of my foot, and then I started feeling pain up my leg. Uh-oh, this is NOT good! What do I do? I stopped and adjusted my shoe, started to run again and...nope...not gonna work. I did this for about a mile - trying different things, making adjustments, curling my toes, stretching them - you name it, I tried it. Nothing was helping. (keep in mind, I've had surgery on both of my feet, and have fused toes, pins, etc. in each foot...I've definitely had issues with them before, but typically I can work it out - not today).
I called Troy. What should I do? Should I keep running on it? Of course he totally knows how I'm feeling and how frustrating this is - to be feeling so good and then your toes just won't work. It's just DUMB! Anyway, we both kinda thought the same thing - better safe than sorry. Treat it delicately and see how long you can go, but don't risk a bigger injury - there's no recovery time left. "Ok, have fun at the pool, Troy...thanks!" And, I was off to give this another try. Well, I only made it a little more than 2 hours and just had to stop. It wasn't getting any better and I was getting more and more frustrated. So, I cut my last, long run short.
Even when I got home and had my shoes off, it hurt to walk on that foot. I'm sure it'll be fine, but it does make me wonder if I need different shoes. Who tries new shoes now?! You just can't. What's sad/funny (not in a ha-ha sort of way)is that I've had a little bit of trouble with my right foot in these shoes. I wondered if I needed a little more "cushion" in the ball of my shoe, than this Brooks has to offer. I think I've been in denial. Hmmmm.

On a happy note...I don't have to get up early tomorrow - yippee!!!!!

I hope your foot is much better by the time you need it most. You've been training very hard and I'm very interested in reading how you finished. Just rest it and take care of it. I know a lot of people at the local tri-s out here run in Asics. I don't know if you've tried them before but maybe they have something that works well and supports well too.

Sorry about that! How's it feeling now? Are you going to check with your podiatrist?
